You can’t turn a PNG into a vector just by saving it in a different format; the logo has to be recreated as paths. There are three ways to do that: automatic tracing (fast, rough), manual redrawing (slower, professional quality) or finding the original vector file from whoever designed the logo. For anything that will be printed, embroidered or enlarged, manual redrawing gives the cleanest result.
Why does saving a PNG as SVG not work?
Many online converters “convert” a PNG to SVG or PDF by simply wrapping the pixel image inside the new file. It looks like a vector file, but it still contains pixels and will still blur when enlarged. Printers and sign shops can spot this immediately. A real vector file contains shapes (paths) that you can select and edit.
Option 1: Find the original vector file
Before paying for conversion, ask whoever made your logo, your previous designer, printer or sign shop, whether they have the AI, EPS, SVG or PDF original. Check old emails for attachments too. This is the fastest and cheapest route when it works.
Option 2: Automatic tracing
Tools like Illustrator’s Image Trace or online vectorizers detect edges and create paths automatically. They work reasonably on simple, high-contrast, large images. On typical logos, expect wobbly curves, rounded corners that should be sharp, extra colors and text that becomes lumpy shapes.
Option 3: Manual redraw (best quality)
A designer uses the PNG as a reference and rebuilds each shape by hand, identifies or matches the font, and sets exact colors. The result is a clean, lightweight file that looks like the original, often better.
