What is an AI file?
AI is Adobe Illustrator’s native format. It keeps layers, editable text and artboards, which makes it the best master file for future changes. Not everyone can open it without Illustrator, so it’s mostly for designers and production shops.
What is an EPS file and do I need one?
EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is an older but still widely supported vector format. Many printers, embroidery companies and promotional-product vendors still request EPS because almost any professional program can open it. If a vendor asks for “a vector file,” EPS is a safe answer.
What is an SVG file?
SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is a web-standard vector format. Browsers display it natively, it stays crisp on high-resolution screens and file sizes are small. It’s also the go-to format for vinyl cutters, laser engravers and craft cutting machines.
Is a PDF logo a vector file?
It can be. A PDF exported from Illustrator with the artwork intact is a vector file. A PDF that just contains a pasted PNG or JPG is not. If you zoom in and edges stay sharp, it’s likely vector.
When should I use PNG or JPG?
For anything on a screen: your website (when SVG isn’t supported), social profiles, email signatures, slides and video overlays. Use PNG when you need a transparent background; JPG when a solid background is fine and a smaller file matters.
